How to Work From Home

To Maximize Your Productivity and Fulfillment

How to work from home to achieve maximum productivity and fulfillment?

Working from home is supposed to provides the best conditions for one to be more productive, yet many first-time home business owners struggle to learn how to work from home without getting distracted and burnt-out.

How to Work From HomeFailing to balance productivity and fulfillment working at home have become a professional hazard for many who are new to work from home careers.

There are universal rules applicable to all work from home careers that will guide you to do this successfully:

  1. Establish a Routine

Even though you don’t have a boss to watch over you, you need to remember that you are now accountable to yourself.

Establish the habit of starting work at a regular time everyday, and work a good number of hours according to your work plan. The advantage of being your own boss, though, is having the liberty to go for breaks as and when you like. Do it as often as you need to boost your productivity and prevent over-working, but not to over-indulge yourself to the point of slackening your work.

  2. Plan Your Day

Prepare a 'To-Do List' each day and follow through it.

Ideally, you could prepare the list the night before, after you have finished the day’s work and reviewed your accomplished tasks for the day. It gives you a sense of direction and a simple road map for the next day. You make a quick mental assessment of how much time you need for each task, and have a rough idea of the total amount of time needed to complete the day’s work.

However, don't fall into the trap of over-planning. Let your daily action be guided by your plan, and not be controlled by it. You should maintain flexibility with the planned tasks. Sometime there are ad-hoc activities that may call for immediate attention.

  3. Dress for Success

You may not need to dress formally at home, but at least tidy and freshen yourself every morning to begin a good day’s work. Although it is fine to occasionally 'chill out' in your doggie old clothes, you will feel more refreshed and energized in comfortable casual gear, with clean-shaven chin and tidy hair.

If what you see in the mirror is a sleepy and sloppy face, it will inevitably affect how you feel and how you perform.

  4. Cut The Clutter

You do not want to feel frustrated at having to spend hours looking for that document or equipment that you need. Keep your work area clean and tidy. You will be able to work from home far more effectively and reduce your stress levels.

  5. Be Appropriately Equipped

You are going to be in your home office for a considerable number of hours every day (at least until you hit the big break!), so make sure you are equipped with the right tools and systems to work with - an appropriate chair, desk, computer, printer, filing system, etc.

Without the right office tools and equipments, you may have to struggle with low productivity and even be at risk of health hazard (suffering from neck pain and shoulder ache).

  6. Establish your Work Flow

Depending on your biorhythm, you will know which time of the day is conducive for highest productivity. You will want to establish a work flow that enable you to accomplish more demanding tasks during your mental peak hours, and leave the less demanding tasks for the rest of the time.

One of the good practices is to organize your work into segments of small and similar tasks. Each task should take less than an hour to complete, after which you should leave your desk for a short break, either for coffee break, catch up on newspaper, or listen to a song.

  7. Protect Your Personal Work Time

You need to be protective of your personal work time.

Do not give your family and friends the ideas that you are now a free man. When they have the impression that you are available anytime (since you are no longer "working"!), you will soon be receiving last-minute calls for lunch, coffee breaks, shopping, and any friendly social activities that can disrupt your work plan.

  8. Take Time Out for You

When you start your business with enthusiasm and ambition, it is easy to lose yourself in work. The endless list of tasks can consume you more than you would realize.

Do remember to take time to smell the roses..... go for a walk.... or an evening run, go out and have a chat with friendly neighbors, listen to your favorite songs, call a friend and keep in contact, etc.

  9. Reward Yourself

When you have achieved a milestone, reward yourself. Go for a good dinner with your family or friends, get a massage, laze away for a day doing nothing, visualize your dream, indulge in a good book, go for a movie, etc.

Learning How To Work From Home

Learning how to work from home with maximum productivity and fulfillment takes time and experience. Personalities also play a part. If you are a disciplined person, and are able to be at peace working in solitary, it will not take long to learn how to work from home effectively.

If you are someone who are weak at self-discipline and are energized by people interaction in the office, then it is foreseeable that you will take a longer time to settle into your home business routine. However, you can tailor your work plan to set aside regular time for social networking activities, so as to balance up the stress and boredom of solitary work at home.

Whichever type you are, with constant refinement, you will develop your best personal work routine and discover how to work from home with maximum productivity and fulfillment in life.
